Welcome to Bakehouse Community Arts

For those who don’t know about us Bakehouse Community Arts is a Charity dedicated to poetry and the spoken word. We aim to promote interest and skills related to writing in Dumfries and Galloway, offering regular events in a warm and welcoming performance space at The Bakehouse in Gatehouse of Fleet. Over the last thirteen years we have hosted many of the best writers from across Scotland and beyond including, including Don Paterson, George Szirtes, Kenneth White, Tessa Ransford OBE, Adrian Mitchell and Liz Lochhead giving our audience an opportunity to hear work of the highest quality. Local writers also have a chance to read their own work alongside their peers and attend high quality workshops where they can share new work and obtain feedback from experienced workshop leaders.

In 2012 we won an Arts and Business Scotland award with a corporate sponsor, for promoting Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on tour in Scotland. We also produce BIG LIT: The Stewartry Book Festival, a four day Literary Festival now in its 10th year. I was awarded an MBE in 2014 for Services to the Arts in Dumfries and Galloway, an honour which more properly belongs to the excellent team and Board which guides the hand of all we do.

We have a growing database both local and International. If you would like your name to be added please subscribe to our mailing list and we’ll make sure you receive all information about BCA’s activities from now on.

Enjoy trawling through the poetic Bakings and films on our pages.

Best wishes,

Chrys Salt MBE
