Bakings is The Bakehouse’s new online literary magazine – poems submitted by invitation alongside recordings of featured poets from previous Bakehouse events. Trawl through the site to find fine poetry from Scotland and beyond alongside film poems and illustrations. We’ll be sending videos out intermittently to a growing national and international database. Videos have been filmed by artist Ken Smyth at The Bakehouse, or submitted courtesy of various clever folk on personal technology. Enjoy.
In spite of a turbulent ‘hold the front page’ 2016 - the horrors of Syria, the upending of political expectations - The Bakehouse at least has good things to report. We hosted some wonderful poetic voices - Des Dillon, Em Strang, Ryan Van Winkle, Gerda Stevenson, Tim Turnbull, Andy Jackson and Ross Donlon, and for the first time ever, BIG LIT actually broke even!!! We hosted a range of talent from Wendy Stewart on her wonderful harp to Patricia Gallimore (Pat Archer at the height of the Archer’s abuse storyline) with her Desert Island books, Karin Fernald with her brilliant one-woman show about the teenage Jane Austen and fine actress Annette Badland (Aunt Babe in East Enders) brought Bad Babes (‘bad babes’ in literature) to the region as The Bakehouse’s contribution to The Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival. This is just the tip of the iceberg of 2016 Bakehouse goodies and we hope to bring you many more in 2017. In the meantime HAPPY EVERYTHING TO EVERYONE IN 2017 from The Bakehouse Team. Hope to see lots of you in it, starting with our annual Burns Night celebrations. It’s always great fun. DO COME!
